Art, Color, And Your Space

Written by Aanchal Gulati, Founder and Creative Director at Vandervin Arts

Ever walked into a room and thought wow this is stunning? Intangible is the energy of a room . Tangible is the design and décor.

Being home through the pandemic and scrolling through social media especially Pinterest and Instagram have had everyone looking inward at their homes and living spaces and created a huge desire to make them beautiful.

Interest in Art has grown and gone is the notion that beautiful art belongs only in galleries and in the homes of the privileged few. Art is a form of expression that can really bring personality to a space. It creates a focal point, a mood,  a feeling and in some cases a conversation.

Understanding your taste

Many people get overwhelmed when trying to select the perfect piece for their wall, said Aanchal Gulati, Founder of Vandervin Arts. “Art is so subjective and our top tip would be to buy art that speaks to you”. Walking around galleries and interior stores is a good place to start. It gives you an idea of your preferences. These days there is a huge range available on online galleries too. “Often you will find that there is a painting that you keep coming back to. Either it’s the subject or the colours that appeal and hold your interest. Sometimes you just know it’s the perfect fit for your space”

Wellbeing at home through colour

It is widely known that colour therapy has impact on mood and well-being. Colour and light or Chromotherapy has been used since ancient times in India, Egypt, China and Greece. It is said to be very effective in correcting any physical or mental imbalances.

The colors you pick to decorate your home reflect your taste, your creativity, and they allow you to give each room its own individual touch. However, the tones you choose also have an impact on your wellbeing and that of your family.

Visual comfort in your home goes much further than simply being in an environment that is pleasing to the eye. Our visual surroundings have a profound effect on the way we think, feel and act, both consciously and subconsciously. The colors around us influence our mood and our health.

Colors and their perception tend to be subjective, and the feelings they evoke are personal and connected to your experience. That’s why it is important to consider how color makes you feel, rather than blindly follow design trends. Before you tackle the decoration or the choosing paintings of your rooms, follow our guide to find out more about what common colors produce as emotional responses.

Colour connections

What mood do you want to create? Which colors will help you achieve that mood?

Colours can make you feel happy or sad, and they can make us feel relaxed, excited or even hungry. These reactions are evoked be many factors such as psychological effects, biological conditioning and cultural imprinting. Also, brightness and tone of a colour convey whether its effect on us is warm or cold

Happy colours

Happy colours are generally bright, warm colours like yellow, orange, pink and red. Pastels like peach, light pink or lilac can also have an uplifting effect on your mood. The brighter and lighter a color, the happier and more optimistic it will make you feel. Another way colors can create happy emotions is by combining multiple primary and secondary colors together for a youthful, colorful effect.

Energizing colours

Strong, bright, neon colours like red, yellow, green can be attention grabbing and make you more alert. Red and orange can be passionate and enthusiastic . While Yellow can evoke spontaneity and happiness .They can be overwhelming if over used but used along more mute tones can have a refreshing productive visual effect.

Calming colors

Cool colors like blue and green can make you feel calm. Skies and green fields radiate calmness .Pastel colors and particularly cool toned pastels like baby blue, lilac and mint have a calming and relaxing effect. Neutrals like white, beige and grey can also make you feel calm. The fewer colors you combine and the simpler and more pared back a design is, the more calming it will feel.
